Wegovy Pill vs Foundayo: Comparing the Oral GLP-1 Weight Loss Pills

The two GLP-1 pills for weight loss work differently, are taken differently, and produced different results in their trials. Here is how they compare with each other and with weekly injections like Wegovy and Zepbound, plus a tool to see which fits your routine.

The short answer: The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) produced somewhat more weight loss in its main trial, but it must be taken on an empty stomach with a 30 minute wait before eating or drinking. Foundayo (orforglipron) can be taken any time of day, with or without food. Both start at $149 a month self-pay. Neither has been compared head to head with the other, and both produce less average weight loss than the injectable versions.

How to take the Wegovy pill

The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Wegovy and Ozempic injections, combined with an ingredient that helps it get absorbed through the stomach before it breaks down. That absorption is fragile, which is why the rules are strict:

    • Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
    • Swallow it whole with a small sip of plain water.
    • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else (including coffee), or taking other medications.

Doses step up from 1.5 mg to 4 mg, 9 mg, and a 25 mg maintenance dose. If your mornings are predictable, this is easy. If you wake up and reach for coffee or take other pills right away, it can be the hardest part of the medication.

    How to take Foundayo

Foundayo (orforglipron) is a small molecule rather than a peptide, so food and water don't interfere with absorption. You can take it at any time of day, with or without a meal. Treatment starts at 0.8 mg, increases to 2.5 mg after at least 30 days, then to 5.5 mg, with further increases to 9 mg, 14.5 mg, or 17.2 mg based on response and tolerability.

A few label details matter for specific people:

    • Birth control pills: Foundayo can reduce how well oral contraceptives work. The label advises a backup method for 30 days after starting and after each dose increase.
    • Other medications: With strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as clarithromycin or ketoconazole), the maximum Foundayo dose is 9 mg. Simvastatin should not exceed 20 mg daily.

One oddity: the approved tablet strengths are numbered differently from the doses tested in the ATTAIN-1 trial (6, 12, and 36 mg), so the trial numbers don't map one-to-one onto the doses you'll see on a prescription.

Which pill causes more weight loss?

In their main trials, the Wegovy pill produced an average 13.6% weight loss over 64 weeks in OASIS 4, compared with 2.2% on placebo. Foundayo's highest dose produced about 11.2% over 72 weeks in ATTAIN-1 when everyone randomized is counted, or 12.4% among people who stayed on treatment. The Wegovy pill's equivalent figure for people who kept taking it was 16.6%.

That comparison has limits. The trials enrolled different people for different lengths of time, and OASIS 4 prescribed a structured 500 calorie daily deficit while ATTAIN-1 gave general lifestyle advice. There is no head-to-head trial in people with obesity, and Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly each dispute claims that the other's pill is better. The fair summary: the Wegovy pill looks somewhat stronger on average, Foundayo is easier to take correctly, and individual response varies more than the difference between the averages.

Are weight loss pills as effective as injections?

On average, no. Injectable Wegovy produced about 15% weight loss in STEP 1, and Zepbound up to about 21% in SURMOUNT-1, both higher than either pill. Clinicians have reported that some patients who switched from injections to the Wegovy pill for cost reasons saw less weight loss than they expected. The pills make the most sense for people who won't use injections, who want a lower starting price, or who are moving into a maintenance phase after losing weight on an injection. Lilly has studied switching people from injections to Foundayo and reported that it helped them maintain their weight loss.

Side effects of the Wegovy pill and Foundayo

Both pills cause the same family of side effects as the injections: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach discomfort, usually worst in the days after a dose increase. In OASIS 4, gastrointestinal side effects were reported by 74% of people on the Wegovy pill versus 42% on placebo. In ATTAIN-1, nausea affected roughly 29% to 36% of people depending on dose, and between 5% and 10% stopped Foundayo because of side effects, compared with about 3% on placebo.

Semaglutide labels carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors, and GLP-1 medications as a class carry warnings for pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and dehydration from gastrointestinal side effects. Review the full prescribing information with your prescriber before starting either pill.

How much do the GLP-1 pills cost?

Both launched at $149 per month self-pay for the starting dose. The Wegovy pill's maintenance doses (9 mg and 25 mg) cost $299 a month through NovoCare. Foundayo's higher doses run up to about $349 a month through LillyDirect. With commercial insurance that covers weight loss medication, both companies advertise copays as low as $25 a month. Prices and programs have changed several times in 2026, so confirm before you start.

    Protecting muscle on any GLP-1

Whether you choose a pill or an injection, a meaningful share of weight lost on GLP-1 medications can come from lean mass unless you strength train and eat enough protein. Use the GLP-1 protein calculator to get your daily target and a minimum training plan.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill better than Foundayo?

The Wegovy pill produced more average weight loss in its trial (13.6% vs about 11 to 12%), but the trials weren't directly comparable and no head-to-head study exists. Foundayo is easier to take because it has no food or water restrictions.

Can I drink coffee after taking the Wegovy pill?

Not right away. Wait at least 30 minutes after the pill before coffee, food, other drinks, or other medications. Taking it with coffee can reduce how much semaglutide you absorb.

Can you take Foundayo with food?

Yes. Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food or water.

Is the GLP-1 pill as effective as Ozempic or Wegovy injections?

On average, the pills produce somewhat less weight loss than injectable Wegovy (about 15%) and Zepbound (up to about 21%). The Wegovy pill comes closest to injectable semaglutide.

How much does Foundayo cost without insurance?

Foundayo starts at $149 per month self-pay through LillyDirect, with higher doses costing more, up to about $349 per month. Check LillyDirect for current pricing.

Can I switch from Wegovy or Zepbound injections to a pill?

Some people do, often for cost or convenience, and Lilly has studied switching to Foundayo for weight maintenance. Expect that average weight loss on the pills is lower than on injections, and make the switch with your prescriber's guidance.
